When Marnie Was There

When Shy Artistic Anna moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle, she stumbles upon an old mansion surrounded by marshes, and the mysterious young girl, Marnie, who lives there. The two girls instantly form a unique connection and friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh House again and again, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend.

Studio Ghibli are, for very obvious reasons, renowned for imaginative highly visual story telling.  When Marnie Was There is yet another example of this glorious medium of film, where the characters have such depth of feeling, that you tend to forget it is animation you are watching.

Basing the story on Joan G. Robinson's novel of the same name, Hiromasa Yonebayashi has addressed the issues of loneliness and abandonment head on with a subtlety and tenderness Studio Ghibli seem to always get so perfect. Because even though Anna can behave like a bit of a brat, we learn where that comes from in her life and root for her journey of discovery about herself. To find out that she does belong.

The world in this film reflects our society with such accuracy (see if you can spot the nod to our attachment to mobile phones) and the isolation felt by so many people yet spoken about by so few. But it's not depressing. Because when you sit on a couch, in a cinema or in bed on your laptop, watching this film, sometimes you'll relate, mostly you'll understand, but above all, you'll be left with that warm feeling. Studio Ghibli gets you. And they will tell your stories.
